The He-219 "Uhu" (meaning "Owl") was the only one of two night fighters in WWII that designed from the very beginning strictly as a night fighter. It proved quite capable in this role. During the first six sorties in the summer of 1943, twenty British aircraft were shot down, including no less than six Mosquitos. Indeed, the He-219 was the only pre-1945 aircraft capable of downing the fast and formidable Mosquito. This scene portrays an Uhu of 1/Nachtjagdgestschwader 1 as it flames a Mossie, its most difficult quarry.
