Eventually replaced by the Kyushu K9W1, the antiquated Yokosuka K2Y2 was still the standard naval primary trainer when the war began. The original K2Y1 (which was essentially an improved version of the British Avro 504K) was first produced in 1928 and was placed in production as the Navy Type 3 Primary Trainer Model 1. However, the major production version was the K2Y2, which had a different engine and was introduced in 1930. A total of 260 K2Ys were produced by six different manufacturers.
