Although it appeared to be an example of advanced Japanese fighter design, the AT-27 was actually a hoax. After the war it was discovered to be nothing more than a young designer's dream published in a pre-war Japanese magazine, and then mis-interpreted at the beginning of the war in the Western press as an actual aircraft. This led to the (fictional) aircraft being assigned the Allied codename of "Gus".
