Described in the original Allied lists of Japanese aircraft as a "Type 97 Floatplane" (and later as a Kawanishi Type 97 Fighter"), the Allied-assigned codename of "Bob" was dropped in early 1943. It's original assignment was a so-called Aichi Type 97, which in reality was a misidentified Nakajima E2N1 Type 15 reconnaissance seaplane of the 1920s (though obsolete and not in use during WWII). (Note that the Allied codename of "Bob" was later re-assigned to the Kawasaki Ki-28 after it stopped being used for the Aichi Type 97.)
